Tips to Stay Warm and Well in Adelaide this Winter
June 15, 2019. Winter is definitely here and in the last few weeks we have battened down the hatches and started the Adelaide version of “hibernation” - basically more time indoors with a few outings to local festivals or the footy!
Winter is an opportunity for some quiet inner reflection, slowing down to pay attention to your health and wellbeing and give your body what it needs to boost your immune system in preparation for spring. Below are some practical tips that have stood the test of time, to stay well and healthy throughout the cold and windy winter season.
Eat Nature’s winter harvest to boost your immune system
Nature provides a harvest in winter that is packed with vitamins and nutrients needed to boost your immune system throughout the season. For example, citrus fruits such oranges and mandarins have high levels of Vitamin C, as well as Vitamin B’s, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and copper, all which strengthen your immune system. Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, along with carrots, garlic, mushrooms and pumpkin are rich in beta-carotene and bioflavonoids which are powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties.
If you can, go to the local markets and buy fresh produce direct from the farmer, they will sell only what’s in season and beneficial for winter. The more colourful the better. It’s seasonal, it’s fresh and it’s local.
Keep doing your normal exercises throughout winter. Even just a simple walk in the park will boost your wellbeing. A 30 minute walk every day has proven to have many health benefits – it can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce body fat and reduce the risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, or osteoporosis.
If you’re interested in walking groups, the Heart Foundation has walking groups around the city that you can join here.
Drink warm broths and teas
In winter the body needs warmth – inside and outside. Water is important to keep hydrated, but it is more important that the body has warm broths and teas. Stews and soups are perfect so get some good recipes and make a habit of keeping a pot simmering through winter. Teas are rich in plant flavonoids which are natural antioxidants and tea drinkers have a lower risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Be diligent with removing mould
Make sure your home is aired properly during winter. Even though we like to shut the doors and windows to keep the warmth inside, make a time to leave windows and doors open to let fresh air in. Remove mould where you see it and do your best to prevent it from reoccurring. Mould produces tiny spores that can be carried in the air and inhaled which can trigger all sorts of health conditions such as nasal congestion, coughing and respiratory infections.
Keep warm with layers in winter. Tie a scarf around your neck to prevent the cold air and wind affecting you and a singlet is always recommended in winter to keep your torso snug. It is important to keep your body temperature stable during winter so that you are resilient to bugs.
Even though many of us believe we will catch a cold just because you are out in the cold, this is not technically correct. If you don't protect against the cold, your peripheral blood vessels that keep you warm will shut down, which compromises your immune system. This is what lowers the immune system potentially making you vulnerable to germs.
Good quality sleep boosts immunity and memory
Quality sleep promotes better memory function according to this study. Sleep deprivation affects proper functioning of the memory centres in the brain and sleep is what is required to develop long term memory and process new experiences and learnings during the day. When you are sleeping, your body is going through a regeneration process and every tissue is affected. Sleep boosts the immune system, regulates your hormones, reduces blood pressure and supports a healthy heart.
