Bedding for a family of 4, 5, or more? There is a Star Laundromat near you!

Nov 12, 2018. How often do you wash your sheets, pillows and doonas? Weekly, fortnightly, monthly? Less?

We spend eight hours a night sleeping, tossing, turning, sweating and shedding layers of skin all over our bedding every night. Our beds are a haven for dust mites and bugs of all sorts. The following statistics may make you say “yuk” but fear not, this is just part of the huge ecosystem we all live and breathe.

  • Did you know there are 16 species of fungi that live in our pillows?
  • Did you know that your doona contains on average 20,000 dust mites?
  • Did you know we shed 10 grams of dead skin cells per week?

Ideally, sheets and pillow cases should be washed weekly, while pillows and doonas should be washed fortnightly or at least monthly, to keep them fresh. Dust mites are not harmful to humans, they just live off the dead skins cells we shed daily.

But, they do cause allergies, sensitivities and will affect our sleep if we don’t regularly clean them out of our beds and bedding.

How many sheets and doonas are there for a family of 4, 5, or more? Do the washing in less than an hour!

A lot! If you have a large washing machine, your washing time for your family’s bedding may only be a few hours, but what if you could cut this time down to an hour all up?

Our industrial strength washing machines are up to 19kg and our dryers are 15kg. This means you can get your family’s bedding and doonas done in less than an hour – making this regular chore not such a painfully time-consuming exercise.

In fact, you can load up our washing machines with your sheets, bedding and doonas, two machines at the same time if you need to, hit the “start” button, and go off to do the grocery shopping or catch up for a coffee with a friend.

Of course you still need to come back and dry them, but you might decide to catch up on some work, pay your bills or watch your favourite Netflix program with our free WiFi while you wait.

Whatever the case, there are many Star Laundromats around Adelaide in convenient locations with easy parking.

Washing tip - feather and cotton doonas and pillows are easily washed and dried in washing machines and dryers and can handle temperatures of 60-70 degrees which will also kill most bugs. Drying them in our large Dexter Dryers will fluff them up nicely too.

A little more caution is needed with woollen doonas and pillows. Make sure you wash them under 30 degree water temperature, and then ideally take them home to dry flat in the sun. Wool is beautiful to sleep under but a little more maintenance is required.

Here’s a dust mite tip - leave your bed unmade a couple of times every week, pull the bedding down to the end and open the windows in your bedroom. This allows the bed to get fresh air and kill off a few unwanted dust mites and other bugs.
