5 health benefits of drinking coffee
Feb 19, 2020. Coffee drinkers have something to celebrate. The more science looks into whether coffee is good for you or not, the more they’re discovering that coffee is good for you!
Coffee was discovered over a thousand years ago but made its way into the living room as a beverage in Australia when the first fleet arrived in 1788. Australians consume 1.92 kilograms of coffee per person per year and 75% of Australians drink at least one cup of coffee a day.
There has been plenty of controversy associated with coffee over the years, but it appears there are more benefits to drinking coffee than not. So here are five reasons to enjoy that cuppa in the morning even more.
1. Lowers the risk of Type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes happens most often in people over 45 years old and occurs when the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin which is needed to moderate sugar in our blood. Most diabetes cases are Type 2 diabetes.
Science has shown that coffee consumption reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes with a 23–50% lower risk of getting this disease.
2. Protects from Alzheimer’s and dementia
Alzheimer's disease affects people over 65 years old and it’s the most common cause of dementia worldwide. Young onset dementia can occur in people as young as 50.
Coffee drinkers have up to a 65% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease, which is a statistic worth noting. Happy news for coffee lovers.
3. Protects your liver
Problems with the liver include conditions such as hepatitis and fatty liver disease which lead to cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis of the liver is when the tissue begins to scar making difficult for the liver to function.
According to research, people who drink 4 cups of coffee or more a day reduce their incidence of liver disease by more than 80%.
4. Lowers risk of some cancers
The incidence of bowel cancer in Australia is higher for people over 50 years old. That’s why the government send you that little diagnostic kit in the mail when you turn 50!
Moderate consumption of coffee can reduce the risk of developing bowel cancer by 26%.
5. Less risk of heart disease
Studies around heart disease have shown than the risk of a stroke reduces by 20% in people who drink 3-4 cups of coffee per day. Arteries do not harden with coffee consumption as was previously thought, in fact coffee contributes to less hardening of the arteries.
If you’re not a coffee lover, there are many other ways to consume foods rich in antioxidants, black tea being one of them. But if you are a coffee lover, you can now enjoy your cup of coffee or two every day. Like most food and drinks we consume however, good health is about moderation.
