7 things you didn’t know you could wash at your local laundromat

When you think “laundry,” you probably picture clothes, towels, and maybe the odd doona. But your local Star Laundromat is equipped to handle so much more. We have small and large machines for all-sized loads, and our larger, high-performance washers and dryers aren’t just for everyday loads – they’re built for the bulkier and often-overlooked items you might not even realise need a good clean.

Here are some surprising things you can wash at your local laundromat.

1. Pet beds and blankets

If your furry friend has a favourite blanket or plush bed that’s looking (and smelling) a bit worse for wear, bring it in. We have a machine in each laundromat that is dedicated to pet items only. Our machines can handle the bulk and the fur.
Tip: Give items a good shake outdoors first to remove excess hair, and choose a warmer temperature setting to help eliminate odours and bacteria. Use fragrance-free detergent if your pet has sensitive skin.

2. Reusable shopping bags

Those fabric and synthetic shopping bags collect a lot of hidden dirt and germs in the process. Tossing them into a gentle cycle at the laundromat every few weeks can help keep them clean and hygienic.
Just check the label – many bags are safe for a cold wash and air drying.

3. Curtains

Dust, pet hair, and air pollution cling to curtains like magnets. Yet most people rarely think to wash them. If you have bulky curtains that won’t fit in a home washer (or you’re worried about damaging them), our large-capacity machines are perfect.
Tip: Remove hooks and rings first, and opt for a gentle cycle with mild detergent.

4. Stuffed toys and plushies

Kids’ favourite stuffed animals can get a little… loved. If they’re machine-washable, they’ll come out of our washers looking fluffy and fresh.
Tip: Place them in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase to protect delicate stitching and use a gentle, cold-water wash.

5. Gym and yoga mats

Yes – some flexible rubber or fabric-lined gym mats can go in a washer! (Check the label first.) If your mat is washer-safe, our machines will make them fresh and like new. Choose a cool wash and skip the spin cycle if you’re unsure.
Tip: Let mats air dry flat and only put them in the dryer if the label says it’s safe.

6. Car seat covers and floor mats

Between crumbs, coffee spills and muddy shoes, your car’s interior gets its fair share of grime. Many fabric car seat covers and rubber-backed floor mats can be washed in commercial machines.
Check labels carefully, and always remove any foam inserts or non-washable backing before laundering.

7. Backpacks and school bags

Backpacks go everywhere – school, parks, buses – and carry more than just books and lunch, in other words – their fair share of dirt and grime. Many are made from tough nylon or canvas that can be machine washed.
Tip: Use a cold, gentle wash, and turn them inside out if possible. Leave them to air dry. Avoid drying them in a hot dryer to prevent warping any plastic parts.

Before you wash

A few quick reminders:

  1. Always check the care label first.
  2. Shake off loose debris and empty pockets, zippers, or compartments.
  3. Use mesh laundry bags for smaller or delicate items.
